island paradise in Southern Thailand: Koh Jum

it is perfect here. we came here by chance after looking at a map and pointing to one of the many islands in southern thailand in the Andaman sea. we were going to stay a few days then move on to some other tropical island nearby, but we are too charmed by the quiet and calm here, so we decided to stay nearly two weeks! We are staying in a humble but sufficient little bungalow with a killer view of the sea from our large front porch.

each night we sit out and watch the sunset, and like clockwork at the very instant the sun is down the jungle behind and all around us comes to life, with it's noisy chorus of insect sounds. The food on the island consists of fresh seafood and lots of fruit. We went to the little hut that sells produce and grabbed the juiciest mangos to snack on when we are laying in the warm shade next to the sea. There are restaurants dotted along the long coast, some perched up on stilts and floating in the treetops, others right near the water. They are all pretty far from our place, but the walk is nice.

We wake early and generally head to our private beach, where we maybe share the sand and sea with a few other travelers, but there is plenty of room for all. There are the nicest little cabanas made of bamboo and palm to offer us shade and a nice comfy place for lounging. it is there that we read and talk and sleep and lounge with the comfort of the perfect water just steps away!

to get to Koh Jum we had to take a ferry boat that is headed to Koh Lanta and arrange for a small wooden boat to meet us at the large boat, which stops for only one or two minutes, enough to step overboard to the small boat which taxis to our doorstep.

Sometimes we walk in on the jungle paths to reach the village where we stock up on water, it is there that the mosquitos feast on my flesh and blood. I am the best mosquito repellent for everyone else, because the just love me so much that they don't bother with others. You're welcome. Tiger balm is the famous thai ointment that has saved my itching legs!

we have monkeys! lots of monkeys, but they are shy and don't let us humans too close. They live up on the mountain but descend a few times each day to scavenge for crabs and other tasty treats or to swing from the trees and play on the beach. They are so cute! I love monkeys.... they look just enough like us that I am mesmerized when watching them do things like eat and play.

things grow differently in the jungle. trees wrap together and beautiful flowers have murderous spikes. leaves are the size of a boogie boards and flowers are in such abundance! if left unattended i think the jungle would swallow our small home in about two weeks! This climate is so conducive to growth, things really thrive here.

like my grandmother, I want to fill my pockets and entire bag with shells! I love them all for their special uniquiness. Josh and I have spent hours crouched down comparing our beautiful findings. We will have to snatch a few up for our memories, but alas, can't take them all!

And of course, of course.... the sunsets here are incredible!

with love, from Koh Jum
