Rural France, a sunday afternoon

Just a few hours south of Paris, in the beautiful countryside is a picturesque town called Gargilesse. It is one of the pretties little town I've seen in a long time. The homes are old stone with wooden shutters and tile roofs, the streets are cobblestoned; winding and narrow.

In the center of the small town there is a stone church that was built in during the 12th century! Now that is old. We wandered in the unlocked doors and explored the cool empty building, with stone stairs so worn they sagged and paintings so faded they are almost only a memory. There is a crypt down a narrow flight of stone steps, the air smells dank and the inscribed tablets remind us of the bones that lie somewhere beneath.

We went to this small town with the small family we are staying with this month. They have a perfect old VW bus, it's all original and in beautiful condition. So we piled in the bus and drove down the road, not far at all, to a quiet river spot, with some grass and big pine trees hovering around. There we had an elaborate French style picnic, with a variety of cheeses, meats, and breads. We explored around the river for a while, getting to know our new friends and enjoying the fresh spring air.
